Elizabeth Gilbert posted this quote today and it struck me especially funny. I got a good chuckle out of it.
Then I got to work, and the quote stayed with me. If no one knows what you are doing, you aren’t doing it wrong, but are you doing it right?
As I was searching for the author of the quote (no luck!), I found this related quote:
Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing, but nobody else does. – Steuart H. Britt
That was when this quote really settled in for me. We can play it safe and make sure we’re “not doing it wrong.” But to be successful, people have to know what we’re doing. We can’t have both safety and success. We have to choose. “Winking at the girl” (or guy) in the dark is safe; there’s no risk of being rejected. But there’s also no chance at success.
This is so true in marketing our businesses. To be successful, we have to clearly name what it is we’re doing. And then we have to make sure people know about it.
It’s Monday. Get going!
